Need 
According to the federal government, there are between 3.5 and 6.5 million children with a mental illness in America. Of these, only 20% are diagnosed and treated. About 50% drop out of school. Most concerning, 70% of juveniles in correctional facilities suffer from mental illness.
Severe emotional disturbances take many forms, including acute depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, addiction and dependency, personality disorders, self-mutilation, extreme attention deficit hyper-activity disorder, learning disabilities, and eating disorders.
Studies show that children with severe emotional disturbances are concentrated in higher-poverty areas. It should be noted that higher poverty areas are more likely to be comprised of minority populations.
History
Hope Renews was founded in 2004 by a group of parents, whose teens attended a residential treatment center in Utah. They experienced the trauma of raising a child with severe emotional distress, and found out first-hand how difficult it was to pay for treatment. To help other families, they began Hope Renews.
Since then Hope Renews has:
- Made scholarships and loans in excess of $500,000.
- Provided an additional 139 months of treatment for troubled teens.
- Provided education and support with Hope ReNews magazine, parent meetings and referrals.
